Late Tuesday night, Estill volunteer firefighter James Carter pulled a seven-year-old child from a smoke-filled bedroom in a house fire on Oak Street.
Carter, 34, a volunteer with the Estill Fire Department for eight years, was first on scene. He entered the home after neighbors reported a child may be trapped.
"You don't think. You just go," Carter said. "That little girl is somebody's whole world."
The child was treated for smoke inhalation and released. The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
Carter is the first Hampton Hero spotlight recipient.
